You Are Not, Yet You Are

You are not a feeling, but much more than that.
Why do I settle for less?

You are not a feeling but my closest companion, my Father.
You are not fleeting emotions, but faithful.
Though I have not seen you, I love You.
Though I do not now see You, I believe in You.

You are not fickle, but a foundation.
You are not flimsy, but firm.
You are not fractured, but fixed.
You are not a foretaste, but a fulfillment.
Oh Lord, be to me my strength.
Take courage my heart and rest in His embrace.

You are not a foe but have made me your friend.
You are not nearsighted but all-wise.
You are not weak but strong in dealing with me.
You are not distant, but here.
Yet, You are more than I can comprehend.
You are a God of seeing, truly here I have seen Him who looks after me.

“Though you have not seen Him, you love Him. Though You do not now see Him, you believe in Him with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” 1 Peter 1:8-9

“…He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.”  2 Corinthians 13:3

“So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, ‘You are a God of seeing,’ for she said, ‘Truly here I have seen Him who looks after me.” Genesis 16:13

How This Poem Came to Be.

How good it is for us to remind ourselves of who our God is. This poem was born out of a time in my life when the days were dark. Thick, dark clouds hovered and lingered and seemed to be content staying where they were. It was difficult to just do the next thing. I felt like Hagar in Genesis 16. Unseen, abandoned, confused, and hurt not by people, but by God. Where was He in the midst of this desert of my life? Why was He allowing this? I was crying out to Him, but it felt like an echo chamber. Yet, He was there. He had always been there. He was holding me the whole time. His word and communion with him in prayer was the only comfort. The Psalms were the wind in my sails. They were the pleas of my heart. They pointed me back to who our God is. I am thankful for that season because God slowly showed me who He was. He forced it to do good to me. He grew a love in me for Himself when He was all I had. No other comfort would suffice. Truly, He is a God of seeing, even through a dark providence. I pray this poem reminds you of who God is and that He will open up our eyes to see who He is in His word. So, go. Read His word and feast on God.

“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.” Jeremiah 15:16.
